AI Is Moving Twice as Fast as the Internet—And We’re Not Leaving Older Adults Behind

Updated: Jul 24

Here's something to think about: Artificial intelligence is being adopted at twice the rate of the internet.

It took the internet over a decade to reach widespread use. But Artificial Intelligence is showing up in homes, hospitals, and devices in just a few short years—and it’s already reshaping how we live, work, and communicate.

For many of us, that pace feels exciting. For others—especially older adults—it can feel like a blur of updates, apps, and unfamiliar buttons.

Technology isn’t just changing quickly—it’s changing everything.

But here’s the good news: we can keep up, together.

The Tech Confidence Series: Meeting Real Needs

That’s why we launched the Tech Confidence Series—a new monthly offering designed to help older adults feel secure, informed, and empowered with the tools they use every day.

Each workshop in the series is focused on real-world, everyday wins. No jargon. No tech craziness. Just practical help delivered in a friendly, judgment-free way.

Here’s a taste of what the series includes:

  • Digital Decluttering – Learn to clean up email inboxes, organize phone photos, and remove digital distractions.

  • AI Awareness – Understand the tools already on your device like voice assistants and writing help.

  • Smartphones 101 & Beyond – From basic calls and texts to critical health features like medical IDs and emergency contacts.

From internet scams to smart camera tips, these sessions are designed to build confidence one step at a time. Whether someone is returning after a long break or just wants to stop feeling “behind,” this series meets them where they are.

Who This Is For

  • Libraries that want easy-to-offer, impactful programming.

  • Senior centers trying to keep up with the pace of digital change.

  • Housing communities looking to support residents in practical, meaningful ways.

  • Organizations serving older adults who want to do more than hand out tech brochures.

  • Volunteers looking to learn how to communicate tech concepts to older adults

If that’s you—we want to hear from you.

We’re assembling a schedule for Fall and Winter now and looking for sites who want to bring this to their community. You can run the full series or choose the sessions that fit. We’ll even help organize regional cohorts so neighboring organizations can split costs and share dates.

Let’s Make Tech Feel Welcoming—Not Overwhelming

This is about more than clicking buttons or understanding apps. It’s about confidence, independence, and connection.

Whether you’re a program coordinator, a tech advocate, or just someone who believes in closing the digital divide, we invite you to be part of this.
